memories associated with a specific spot..

P my 13 year old son is great at recalling incidents that are associated with a specific place.. like a specific turn of a street, or a stream ...etc.

One day while we were cycling in the woods behind home, there was a gravelly down slope that my daughter went down with me and P following behind. As she was speeding down I had my heart in my throat as she suddenly turned wobbly and the handle of the cycle was wiggling over the slippery gravel. P started laughing at the sight and I snapped impatiently.. Don't you see how scary that is, how can you feel amused I said.!! Anyway my daughter made it safely down the slope and p and i exchanged looks..i glared at him and when i saw his face with barely suppressed amusement, i burst out laughing myself,.. Today many months later, my daughter being away at a friends place, P and me were cycling down the same slope.. P was ahead of me and all of a sudden the handle of his bike was wiggling and he was wobbling.. It took me a moment to recollect the past incident and to notice his naughty smile and gleeful expression.

A very similar incident reminds of his very early years when he was barely four and we were riding a two wheeler bike to my mum's place in Bangalore. I was expecting and almost full term. The scooter was the preferred option to taking an auto rickshaw. The road was badly lit but we sped on comforted by the familiarity of the route. When suddenly there was a big hump on the road and we were almost thrown off the bike. A newly constructed well meaning speed breaker was the cause!! I was really shaken and we had to stop on the sidewalk for a few minutes until I regained my nerves and composure.. having assured myself that P was OK.

A year or so later when we were driving (our new car) to my mums place and my daughter was not really on her best behaviour beside P. As we crossed the same speed breaker that was quite familiar by now, P said, 'Remember the speed breaker amma.. and how we had accinet (that was his word then for accident). So now I know why she (his little sister) is like this, ya?'!!! Saying this he tapped his little forefinger to his temple and then moved it around in circles, indicating that she had something quite wrong with her mental status!

He also remembers some not so happy memories that arise from specific places.. I try to remember only the good ones and hope he does the same too!!

That is hilarious! Reasoning for your daughter. Perhaps, it would have been more funny if he would have linked that with the cycling too. This is just me kidding.

Pilgrim.. Yes, isnt it really funny. Also how the threads of memory are connected..it takes an instant to go back to a specific day many years ago..

Yes, I can understand that, You feel that it just happened and then suddenly you see how many years have passed so fast. Memories have an uncanny way of showing us the time.

I see how this can happen. Memories are something that just appear in the most unusual times. It is kind of nice.
