Daffodills

ITS ALMOST SPRING.. THE DAFFODILLS ARE JUST ABOUT HERE...!!!

The Daffodills
By William Wordsworth

I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o'er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.

Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the milky way,
They stretched in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay:
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.

The waves beside them danced; but they
Out-did the sparkling waves in glee:
A poet could not but be gay,
In such a jocund company:
I gazed---and gazed---but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought:

For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils.

Whilst schooling, we had to learn this poem and memorise it. Living in India I did not appreciate the changes in weather and the significance of the daffodils was lost on me. It is only after coming to England that I comprehended the beauty of spring and how uplifting it is!!!

Hi Jyoti.. I agree completely!
Have you ever been to the Lake District in the UK? It was where William Wordsworth lived in a cottage called Dove Cottage. The area is beautiful and if you go there at springtime you know exactly how he felt when writing that poem.

Savitha,

I have visited the Lake District on four occasions but none when the daffodils were in bloom....but even without the daffodils it is beautiful. Have also visited the Dove cottage in Spring time but again without the daffodils.

I was a very poor student in the UK when I visited the place. In spite of the inconveniences that are a result of a shoe string budget, this is my idea of heaven on earth!!

Daffodils is my favorite poem. Thanks for reminding me of my childhood days when we had to remember and recite it in schools. I hope you would continue posting such stuff.
