Rakshababdhan...

Rakhi brings back some brilliant memories. My brother is a year older and we enjoyed a great kinship, as kids and now. As children we lived in a joint family and he happened to be the only boy!! We were 5 girls and on rakshabandhan his wrists were covered with multicoloured, candy pick and golden tasslely rakhis. As years progressed our rakhis turned more and more sober. The laddus and Mysore paks and halwas turned into 5star and fruit and nut chocolates!! The bonds however have not lost any intensity.

True to the real meaning of rakhi, we have always come to each others rescue, have shared many a childhood memory, bringing a burst of giggles and even a tear.. We have weathered many rough times in our lives; have probably been far away and seemed out of reach, but have shared fears and provided advice and lent an ear to each other..

Today, I appreciate these loving rituals and festivas that have been part of growing up in India. We try to keep them alive in our lives and more so in the bonds we have with loved ones. When my kids are grown up and need someone to share their worries, hopes and dreams ... I hope that I will be there for them, that I will understand their thoughts. I pray also that that they will nurture the bonds they have with each other as siblings and with cousins (we call tham all brothers and sisters) far far away.. and that the spirit of rakshabandhan lives on!!!
